Putin

During the campaign trail for the 2016 elections, Trump had stated that he would get along well with Putin, even claiming that the two of them had been "stable mates" on the same episode of 60 Minutes in September. Putin in turn praised Trump as "bright and talented" and "the absolute leader of the presidential race."

Trump said that Putin's praise was a "great honor." He said that "He's running his country and at least he's a leader, unlike what we have in this country."

Trump was criticized for his "bromance" with Putin because of Putin's treatment of reporters and dissidents, among other things.
